What is Corneal Reshaping?

Nicholas Despotidis,OD

I fit my son, Nicholas, with corneal shaping lenses when he was in the fourth grade. While there was a lot of contemplation surrounding the decision, the fact that Nicholas despised wearing eyeglasses made it a lot easier! Another factor was that his eyesight had progressively gotten worse since he started wearing eyeglasses in the second grade. I knew what I had to do.

How Does Corneal Reshaping Work?

Corneal reshaping technology uses a carefully designed rigid oxygen permeable contact lens that gently changes the shape of the front of the eye, called the cornea, while you sleep. The lenses are uniquely designed for every child and are often different between one eye and the other. Interesting, huh? But how does this improve myopia or nearsightedness?

As the child sleeps, the corneal reshaping lens correctly molds the cornea (the very front of the eye) to the shape needed to properly focus light on the retina.  When the child wakes, the lenses are removed. The best news is that because the outer layer of the eye has been reshaped during the night (kind of like braces on teeth), your child can see well during the day—without eyeglasses or contact lenses!

I’ve Never Heard of Corneal Reshaping.  Is it New?

Corneal reshaping is a relatively new area of eye care and I’ll be the first to admit that there is still some controversy surrounding its use. Because of this, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some eye doctors may not be supportive of this option for your child.  Some of the uncertainty on their part may be based on false reports they’ve heard or bad experiences they’ve had with the old technology. It can also be because they simply haven’t researched the treatment thoroughly enough. If you encounter an eye doctor who is less than supportive, I would recommend you get a second opinion from an eye doctor who is familiar with this treatment option. Then, decide what is best for your child.

Now Hear Honest Stories from Parents & Students!

Now it’s time to hear from some of the many parents who have had their stories rewritten through the use of corneal reshaping contact lenses. Take a look at some of their experiences, written in their own words.

There are so many children who have successfully worn corneal reshaping lenses a good portion of their lives. They have grown up into wonderful adults we felt the need to share their stories and experiences with you.
